sleep
i don’t sleep much. i realize that comes along with the territory of being a new parent, but i have never slept much. in fact, my body functions best on no more than four hours of sleep per night. therefore, my schedule tends to be a little backwards. i typically blog around 2:00 in the morning. sometimes i return emails at 3:00 in the morning. and its not uncommon to see me at the grocery store in the middle of the night. it is my peak time. the time where my focus is best. the time where i am most productive.
that being said, there seems to be another little member of our household that has the same schedule. his name, as you might have guessed, is jackson. unfortunately, his flawless streak of sleeping through the night has come to an end. he currently enjoys waking up somewhere between the hours of 2:00 and 4:00. he also seems to focus very well at this time of night, because his determined little cry doesn’t stop until he gets what he wants. and what he wants is to be out of his lonely crib and in our comfy bed. it is a regular occurrence for me to turn over and see kelly’s hand waving in the air to let me know that jackson is in between us.
how does he consistently make his way into our bed? well, considering that he can’t walk yet, that is a great question. it really just boils down to this – we are being worked over by an eight-month-old. and believe me, he has stepped up his game. he used to stop crying the moment you picked him up out of his crib. not anymore. now, he will keep crying and whimpering until you carry him out of the nursery. its like he knows that once we reach the hallway, he’s won. there’s no turning back. then, he switches on the charm. he snuggles his little head up against your chest, and gently closes his eyes. and of course, we melt. the next thing you know, we’re back in bed. all three of us.
the funny thing is that just as i finished that last paragraph, all of the little red lights on our baby monitor began to illuminate. it’s 2:52 in the morning, and jackson is waking up. i guess i better check on him. but not before i go in our bedroom and get his pillow ready.

chick-fil-a
jackson was a little angel this past week. if you need to go back and read that a little slower, we completely understand. it is still new to us as well.
so, as a treat for good behavior, we took him to chick-fil-a for the very first time. this is, of course, a major milestone in any child’s life. many of you probably know that i am an avid chicken lover, and i frequent the chick-fil-a in hendo every week. but seeing this little dude light up made it that much better. from watching the other kids in the indoor playground, to trying to steal a sip of my drink, jackson was loving every minute of it. maybe it had a little something to do with him being in a public high chair for the first time. no car seat. no straps. no supervision. (kidding about the last one). and as always, i’m sure many of the other guests were wondering why we were taking so many pictures of our kid at chick-fil-a. memories people. and you can see all of them by clicking on the pic above.
just think, all that fun without even meeting the walking talking cow. there’s always next week.

mile 4
four years ago today, i married my beautiful wife, kelly. i can’t believe how fast four years have gone, but i can’t imagine spending those years any other way. what makes it even more special is our long journey together. kelly and i went on our first official date in january of 1999. that was ten years ago, and we were only juniors in high school. unbelievable. in fact, it is hard for me to remember a time in my life without kell.
she is my other half. kind and generous. smart and witty. fun and unpredictable. an amazing wife. an unswerving mother. and always a lady. my love for her is beyond words, and our relationship is beyond special. what started as a high school crush has now grown immeasurably. we are husband and wife. father and mother. and most importantly, best friends.
so, in lieu of four years, i have entitled this post “mile 4″. the image above is from a poster that i made for kelly this week. call me crazy, but i definitely pulled off the side of the interstate to shoot the photo that you see above. i can’t tell you how hard it is to find a mile marker with the number four and a sunset behind it, but that is an entirely different story. the bottom line is that we can celebrate. another year. another story. another mile.
